Where “Beautiful Downtown Burbank®” came from
In the late 1960s and '70s, TV shows taped at NBC's Burbank studios turned the phrase into a running joke, because back then downtown was a quiet little place. Viewers across the country heard it every week, and the city took it as a badge of honor. Today it's our name for local pride.
Today · 1 of 2A brand-new front doorHollywood Burbank Airport opens its new terminal on October 13, 2026. It replaces the terminal that has welcomed travelers since 1930, with more room, more natural light and a front door that finally feels like home.

1960sThe joke that stuckWith major TV and film studios now in town, shows taped at NBC's Burbank studios start teasing “Beautiful Downtown Burbank®,” and the phrase goes national.
1928Wings over BurbankAn aircraft plant opens and an airport follows in 1930. Aviation becomes the city's biggest employer, especially during World War II.
1911A city of its ownBurbank incorporates in 1911, becoming the first independent city in the San Fernando Valley.
1887Farm lots & cantaloupesLand developers start selling farm lots in 1887. For years Burbank is known for wheat, orchards and some famously good cantaloupes.
1867A dentist buys a ranchDr. David Burbank, a dentist turned sheep rancher, buys more than 9,000 acres of land in the valley. The town that grows here will carry his name.
